Eye Clinic North graciously accepts all patients, including those with special needs. Our eye doctors have trained in a Chicago Developmental Disabilities clinic and have developed specific skills to examine eyes for those who have trouble communicating or who aren’t thrilled about bright lights and doctors. For decades, our clinics have met the visual needs for children and adults with conditions such as Autism, ADHD, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, and Multiple Sclerosis, as well as those who have suffered from other sensory impairments such strokes and aphasia. Each of those conditions require a different clinical approach and are known to cause certain eye conditions.
The eye is literally an extension of the brain, which is why it is common to see eye problems in those with learning disabilities. Interestingly, more than 50% of children with a developmental delay have an ocular abnormality.
